This is an interesting humanization of great historical figures from Rich DiSilvio, just confirming that history “celebrities” have been humans, who lived their lives through important civilization changes, inventions and progress, along with others who either helped them on their path or made their lives more difficult.There is lot to be gained from this volume, as what we mostly know of the Renaissance is given second place in history books. Only after we have digested the significant progress from the industrialization age, we get to know this era, though it was the first in order of precedence. Somehow, it is less important. The stories about the Florentine Medici family who established the seed of modern banking would have never crossed my path if it weren’t for this curious tale by Di Silvio. It is also interesting to see how have money and power affected art, and to draw a parallel to today’s events - not that different. Even majestic artists such as Leonardo and Michelangelo were dependent on the whims of the most powerful men from the age they lived in!
This volume also contains references to the work of Gutenberg and Petrarca, and, as the author explains, although we view the Enlightenment era through the lens of art and poetry, it actually set in stone many beginnings related to the capitalist enterprises we see nowadays, as well as pragmatic and technical solutions to our modern lives.
Just the right read to get some perspective in the era of massive digitalization.

A titan is an extremely important person. Albert Einstein was a titan in the world of science.
The noun titan comes from Greek mythology, in which the Titans were a race of gods. Today, a titan is someone who is god-like, or powerful and influential in a certain field. Shakespeare was a titan of literature, and The Beatles were titans of music.

Very well describes is the historical and scientific miliieu of that time where the reader can sit back and enjoy the a concise account of intelligent, interesting and formative elements that connect into a universe of knowledge, from The Renaissance to the Atomic Age. He gives credit to formidable pioneers, like the Medici of Florence who grew to be the most powerful bankers in Europe. By the 1400s, the Medici family was one of the primary forces that fueled the Renaissance by bolstering the economy and being patrons to the arts, science, music, philosophy, education, and architecture.

I have long been a fan of DiSilvio’s Tales of Titans volumes, all of which are aimed at humanizing historical figures in order to present a more complex picture of how history was made. We tend to learn and think about history as a one-dimensional subject, and we don’t often think about how the contemporary situations of historical figures influenced them, and in turn, how they influenced history. While many of the characters in this book are admittedly quite distant, DiSilvio turns them into relevant figures who, although their situations are nearly unrecognizable with our modern world, suffer through all of the same human trials and consequences that you or I might face today. There are also powerhouse players that remain household names, including Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein, both of whom I really connected with even before reading their sections. Even if you are not a fan of history, I would highly recommend giving this volume a read. It will change your perspective on the people who have come before you, and who knows, it may even spark an interest in history for you. As always, I was impressed by DiSilvio’s ability to write well, not just accurately, and whatever creative license he took with the characters only served to make me think about what I truly understand about the world and how it was made.
